Job Description and Requirements
SpatialPoint is seeking an individual who possesses the right combination of skills and personality to enhance our Software Development Team. There are a variety of projects that you will work on - from short term consulting projects (days) to large consulting projects (weeks & a few months) to product development. You should be innovative, enthusiastic and be able to handle and complete multiple requests from external customers and internal customers including sales and marketing people. We are a small organization so you will have your hands in many projects. You need to enjoy juggling projects, be self-managed, and make important decisions that drive projects forward. We’ll help you prioritize tasks. We don’t work 9 to 5, but we generally work flexible hours and we expect people to be available to discuss things/work off-hours, etc. as required. You need to be complete and thorough in your work and documentation, and have strong problem solving abilities. You have to love what you are doing and we will try to remove the obstacles in your way. We also encourage out-of-the-box thinking.
We mostly use .Net, but we also have some Java projects, and there are opportunities to utilize other new languages and tools as appropriate. Language knowledge is important, but a strong command of modern software systems, including OO concepts, is paramount. You should also have database experience such that you can design databases, but not necessarily be a DBA. Most projects are web-based, but desktop (Windows API) experience is a plus. Going forward, technologies like SilverLight will be important. We expect in-depth experience with: C# and ASP.NET, Java and JSP/servlets, HTML/CSS and JavaScript (AJAX), XML/XSLT.
As we are in the mapping and geospatial space, having this type of experience is a big plus – but it is not required. Some example systems where experience would be helpful are MapInfo and ESRI technologies. If you don’t have this experience, you will learn it. Also, you should have some mathematics in your background.
The job also entails some technical support, QA work and basic documentation (knowing that you will receive writing and layout help.) You will have direct client interaction along with the rest of the team so the ability to communicate, both written and verbal, is important. You should have a four-year college degree in Computer Science, a related field or equivalent experience.
This position is in our Des Plaines, IL (near O’Hare) office. A work at home arrangement is possible over time. Travel is generally minimal.
