Microsoft Virtual Earth
Virtual Earth is an exciting new component of Microsoft's vision for local search. It allows users to see what it's like to be in a location and explore what they can do there.
A key Microsoft initiative supported from the very top of Microsoft, Virtual Earth confirms Microsoft's long-term commitment to an innovative and industry leading mapping platform.
How does it work?
The Virtual Earth platform is provided over the Web using the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards, making the service agnostic to the operating system. The hardware requirements are no more than are required to host your application.
The Virtual Earth platform consists of two interfaces:
- Virtual Earth Map Control that lets users make request via JavaScript to an AJAX map object,
- MapPoint Web Service API using SOAP XML to communicate with your applications.
A Flexible Foundation for Your Business Solutions
The Virtual Earth platform integrates with your existing business data and interoperates with your information systems through its flexible APIs to enhance data management and reporting capabilities.
The Virtual Earth platform operates across the Internet or your Intranet. Users can access your location solution from desktops, notebooks, mobile devices, or cell phones—any device capable of receiving Web data. From the information submitted, your server requests a map from Virtual Earth using Web technologies such as JavaScript APIs or SOAP-based HTML. Users receive content-rich maps without leaving your site—crucial in a medium where distractions and competitors are just a click away.
The ability to integrate Virtual Earth with practically any back-end data system and deliver maps through multiple devices provides unprecedented flexibility for developers to create custom mapping solutions. These solutions can be used to enhance worker productivity, capture customers, enhance logistics operations, and much more.
Why is Virtual Earth important to you?
Virtual Earth includes:
-
Satellite images with 45-degree-angle views of buildings and neighborhoods
-
Satellite images with street map overlays
-
A Wiki-like feature that lets visitors and business owners add information about local services to the database
-
An online clipboard, or scratch pad, so users can take notes while performing multiple searches
Local searching is becoming increasingly popular with users and online advertisers. It lets users find business listings and complementary information from a specific geographical area, while advertisers are able to target their ads only at those who are looking for services and products in their vicinity.
